“The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, and have done abominable iniquity; There is none who does good.”
– Psalm 53:1

Knowing what we know of the universe today, only a fool would venture to say that there’s no God. It is quite obvious to any rational mind that a notebook computer did not “just happen” all by itself out of nothing, but that it actually had a whole thinking and designing process behind it. It had a maker. In the same way, no rational mind could conclude that the universe or even a human being (which is immeasurably more complex than a computer) just happened from nothing. It is a scientific impossibility to surmise that nothing made everything and this is in essence what Atheists believe.

David looked at those who denied the existence of God (Atheists) and came to the conclusion that they are fools. Although the Hebrew word for fool speaks more of a moral foolishness than an intellectual foolishness, the people that he refers to acted on their conviction, that there is no God, and thus believe in no intelligence behind the universe. The Bible tells us that the real issue is not because of intellectual struggle but because of rebellion. Atheists don’t want anyone to rule over them or tell them what to do, and they do not want to be accountable before God...

“Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man—and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things. Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.”
– Romans 1:22-25

Although they knew the truth, they suppressed it and willingly exchanged it for a lie. Those who deny the existence of God, is not merely turning a blind eye to the obvious evidence, they are wishing God away in their hearts for moral reasons. Just because some people insist on denying the existence of God does not erase God from the universe, it just shows that they are fools. The Bible tells us that God clearly revealed Himself in His creation and that there’s no excuse for not believing in Him.

“For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened.” – Romans 1:20-21

Witnessing to Atheists can be difficult because they do not want to believe in God. Even though Atheism can be proven ridiculous in a myriad of ways, you’ll find that Atheists are not intellectually honest with themselves. For instance, Information Theory and DNA crushes the idea of Atheism because the laws of physics and chemistry cannot account for the existence of information. No Atheist can even tell you where DNA comes from or how exactly evolution happens, but they choose not to follow where knowledge leads. They are proudly proclaiming that there is no God, but who can make such a claim?

“Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said: “Who is this who darkens counsel by words without knowledge? Now prepare yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer Me. Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements? Surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? ... Have you commanded the morning since your days began, and caused the dawn to know its place,” – Job 38:1-5,12

After this answer from the LORD, Job did something that all Atheists should do; he put his hand on his mouth (Job 40:4). Only if a person had absolute knowledge of everything could a claim, such as ‘there is no God’, be made. The most brilliant person on earth does not even know 5 percent of everything there is to know, and any honest person would admit that there could be extensive evidence for God in the 95 percent they do not know. In reality all Atheists are actually Agnostics because no one can know that there is no God. Because Atheists are proud and arrogant, we should not try and convince them to Christianity by mere facts and figures.

“But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: ‘God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble’.” – James 4:6

The best thing you can do for Atheists is to pray for them and to love them! Pray that God would remove the veil and the bondage over their minds and pray that God will break through their proud shells and bring them truth. Remember that only God can touch and change people’s hearts. When witnessing, always use the Word of God. Often people are humbled by comparing themselves to the Ten Commandments, which is God’s standard for righteousness and then the Gospel can be shared with them in simplicity and truth.

“And I, brethren, when I came to you, did not come with excellence of speech or of wisdom declaring to you the testimony of God. For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.”
– 1 Corinthians 2:1-2

Remember that you are not trying to win an argument, but you are trying to lead a sinner away from destruction and into the way of truth. You don’t want to initiate them into some religion, but you want to introduce them to a person, Jesus Christ. Christ alone can save and cleanse a person by His blood, even a fool who denies His existence.
